Days 1–2: Santiago

You’ll depart Miami for South America on day 1, arriving on the morning of day 2 in Santiago, Chile. A cosmopolitan city nestled between the Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, Santiago features a striking downtown with Art Deco and neo-gothic architecture. A guided tour will acquaint you with the city’s history while showing off some great views.

  • Cerro San Cristóbal: Admire a statue of the Virgin Mary at this impressive park where you’ll also get a bird’s-eye view of the city below and the Andes above.
  • Plaza de Armas: The centerpiece of the city is surrounded by historical sites such as the Metropolitan Cathedral, a neoclassical structure that serves as the seat of the archdiocese of Santiago.
  • Hip boutiques and trendy restaurants can be found in Barrio Bellavista, the city’s bohemian quarter where famed poet Pablo Neruda once lived.

Day 3: Punta Arenas

In the morning, you’ll take a flight to Punta Arenas, Chile’s gateway to Patagonia. Spend the day here before heading into the mountains on day 4.

  • Strait of Magellan: This passage between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans turned Punta Arenas into a major trading post.
  • Wool mansions: A wool boom created a lot of wealth for local sheep farmers in the late 19th century. Their lavish mansions stand as a reminder of that successful era.

Days 4–6: Puerto Natales

The Costaustralis Hotel (or some place similar) will be your base of operations as you begin exploring Chile’s stunning natural beauty. Each day you’ll set out on another adventure, from wildlife-spotting to hiking national parks and cruising the surrounding waters.

  • Encounter penguins in their natural habitat at Seno Otway Penguin Colony.
  • Última Esperanza Sound: On day 5, a cruise along this inlet offers up views of Bernardo O’Higgins National Park; you’ll get a chance to hike through the rainforest, too.
  • Torres del Paine National Park: National Geographic’s fifth most beautiful place in the world provides plentiful hiking in the shadow of the Paine mountain range.

Days 7–9: El Calafate

On day 7, you’ll leave Chile for the Argentine side of Patagonia, stopping at a typical estancia for a sheep-shearing demonstration before your arrival in El Calafate. Here you’ll check into Kosten Aike Hotel on the southern shores of Lake Argentino.

  • Stroll along charming streets dotted with pinewood souvenir shops and restaurants.
  • Sail past icebergs on Lake Argentino during a cruise on day 8.
  • Perito Moreno Glacier: The world’s third largest source of freshwater, this massive glacier covers 97 square miles.

Days 10–13: Buenos Aires and Departure

The last leg of the trip brings you to Argentina’s bustling capital city. By day, the outdoor markets buzz with locals selling leather wares, incense, and Argentine garb. By night, sultry music emanates from tango clubs (known locally as milongas).

  • See Latin American masterpieces at MALBA, an art museum with works by Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and many others.
  • Eat like a local: Head to a parrilla, or Argentine steak house, for tira de asado (grilled beef ribs) or milanesa (breaded steak). Parrillas can be found in any part of the city, but some of the best are in the Palermo district.
  • Paseo del Rosedal features beautifully manicured rose gardens and flamingos.
