Days 1–5: Cape Town

Cape Town has more than its fair share of jaw-dropping scenery. The city, which sits on South Africa’s Cape Peninsula, boasts golden Atlantic beaches, dazzling botanical gardens, and Table Mountain National Park, a flattop mountain with unrivaled city views. That natural splendor helped boost the city to the top of the New York Times’ list of 52 Places to Go in 2014, and Cape Town’s designation as this year’s World Design Capital helped too.

  • Three days at leisure: After an included orientation tour, your itinerary in Cape Town is entirely up to you! Spend your time hiking rugged trails, shopping along the trendy V&A Waterfront, or simply wandering the city’s storied streets.
  • Must-see attraction: About an hour outside of the city, the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve features zebras, ostriches, and bamboos, as well as Cape Point, a scenic cliff at the tip of the peninsula.
  • Optional excursions include a half-day tour of Cape Town and Table Mountain ($39 per person, plus your cable car ticket) and a morning tour of Stellenbosch wineries with tastings ($58 per person).

Days 6–9: Kruger National Park

Along South Africa’s northeast border with Mozambique, Kruger National Park is home to an estimated 1,500 lions, 12,000 elephants, 2,500 buffaloes, 1,000 leopards, and 5,000 black and white rhinos. And that’s just counting the Big 5 game animals—the 5-million-acre park also boasts hippos, giraffes, and warthogs along with a slew of smaller mammals, reptiles, and birds.

  • Guided safaris in the morning and afternoon: This deal includes two guided safaris. Hop in open vehicles to go in search of the park’s 145 species of mammal with help from an experienced local guide.
  • Scenic drives: As the group makes its way to and from the park, you’ll pass through miles of scenic countryside dotted with citrus groves, rural villages, and lofty mountains, including the highest peaks in the province of Mpumalanga.
