Hotel at a Glance: Stickett Inn

At the modern, minimalistic Stickett Inn, you can choose your vacation philosophy from the following: Soak, drink, eat, or steam. A room is dedicated to each concept. The Drink room, for instance, is outfitted with a wet bar, and Soak features an oversized trough tub big enough for two. You can cook a gourmet meal in the Eat room—equipped with a full kitchen—and enjoy it on the balcony. If you prefer to relax with a detoxifying blast of steam, the eponymous room’s steam shower should do the trick.

• Design shout-out: Dwell featured the boutique inn for its loft-like looks, which include retro-modern furniture, racy artworks by pop artist Trey Speegle, and the original, wide-plank wood floors dating back to the 1800s.
• In-room amenities: Wake up with a relaxing rain shower using the inn’s high-quality Malin + Goetz bath products. Each room is also equipped with unique Upstate bedding, iPod docking stations, and local snacks and beverages.
• Relax beneath the stars in the outdoor, 10-person hot tub.
• Visit the onsite shop to pick up edibles, dry goods, souvenirs, and a few curiosities.
• What to do: Go skiing and snowboarding at Big Bear, zipline above the treetops, or grab a drink in town.
• Hit the water: Across the street, you can rent canoes, kayaks, rafts, and tubes to take down the Delaware River.

Barryville, New York: Quiet Hamlet on the Delaware River

Tucked on the bank of the Delaware River about 90 miles from NYC, the hamlet of Barryville is a portrait of small-town charm. You can count almost all of its streets on two hands, meaning just all of its restaurants and farmers markets is within walking distance. A little further away is Bethel, a pilgrimage for music fans. Some farmland here ended up playing host to one of the most iconic music festivals: Woodstock. A museum here commemorates the event.

Despite its small size, Barryville offers a wealth of outdoor adventure in its surrounding landscape. Go canoeing, kayaking, or tubing down the river, or head to the Kittatinny Adventure Center. Here, you can get competitive with some paintball and up your adrenaline while ziplining through the trees. The surrounding Catskills can be trekked on foot, bicycle, and skis. Enjoy views of the thick forests and rolling peaks.
