Hotel at a Glance: The Cabins at Seven Foxes

When the time came for Marilyn Krone to name the cabins on her property, inspiration came relatively easy. “We knew we wanted a wildlife theme for the property,” she said. She named them after five animals that are native to the Blue Ridge Mountains: the raccoon, bear, squirrel, fox, and deer. The pet-friendly cabins are tucked in the woods on seven acres. Each private cabin has its own personality, but all have fully stocked kitchens, gas fireplaces, full satellite HDTV, DVD players, gas grills on the porch, and lots of outdoor space. Linens and paper supplies are also provided.

  • Cabin close-up: The 1,200-square-foot Deer Lodge is the deluxe cabin perched on a hill overlooking Toxaway Mountain. It features a private outdoor hot tub, furnished front and back porches, and locally handmade furniture.
  • Al fresco dining: All cabins have outdoor picnic tables and private porches with gas grills.
  • On-site fun includes a tree house, waterfall pond, pavilion, and a small creek with a gem mine area and swing area.
  • Nearby waterfall: 411-foot-high Whitewater Falls.
  • Hit the trails: More than 10,000 acres of state parks and national forests surround the cabins, and all of them have nice hiking, mountain biking, and skiing trails. These include: Blue Ridge Parkway, Pisgah National Forest, Gorges State Park, Dupont State Forest and Whitewater Falls (largest on the East Coast), and Sapphire Ski & tubing Resort in the winter.

Transylvania County, North Carolina: Outdoor Recreation in the Blue Ridge Mountains

More than 260 waterfalls flow in the mountains surrounding Transylvania County in western North Carolina. Whitewater Falls is one of the most accessible as well as one of the most impressive—at 411 feet, it’s the highest waterfall east of the Rockies.

Hiking trails are also abundant here; 1,000 miles of them are scattered across Pisgah National Forest, DuPont State Recreational Forest, and Gorges State Park. For an especially scenic trek, hit the Bearwallow Valley Trail in Gorges. It leads to a 3,200-foot lookout where you can see mountain vistas stretching all the way to South Carolina.
