Historic Vermont Inn in Continual Operation Since 1796

One of Vermont’s oldest continually operating inns, The Dorset Inn first welcomed guests in 1796. After more than 200 years and several renovations, the inn maintains its quaint New England charm. Period furnishings and wide-planked floors distinguish the living rooms, restored tavern, and candlelit dining room. The inn's old-fashioned look and attention to detail helped it earn a spot on Yankee magazine's list of New England's Best Historic Inns.

Each of the individually decorated guest rooms exudes the warmth and comfort of a country cottage in the Green Mountains while providing TV, wireless Internet access, and electric maple-syrup dispensers. Meals served in the dining room are crafted with ingredients sourced from local farmers and the nearby Atlantic Ocean. The menu changes frequently, but wild shrimp, mussels, and cobbler with vanilla ice cream are always on hand. The tavern pours selections from a wide-ranging wine list as well as single-malt scotch, Irish whiskey, and bourbon.

Dorset, VT: New England Town Surrounded by Forested Mountains

Dorset was called one of New England’s best small towns by Boston Magazine, which wrote that “this is what picture perfect looks like.” The town is dotted with homes and shops tucked into the forested mountains and valleys. Visitors perusing the region's stores will likely come away with a haul of fresh cheeses, local maple syrup, and warm woolens.

Hildene, the Georgian Revival mansion built by Robert Todd Lincoln, offers tours of the Lincoln home and access to the gardens. Vistors are welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy on the grounds. Merck Forest & Farmland Center rests on 3,160 acres of forest and farmland in the Taconic Mountains of southwestern Vermont and provides ample trails for exploration, as well as programs and demonstrations.

The slopes of Stratton and Bromley mountain resorts are a gorgeous setting for summer activities, including hiking and mountain biking. At Stratton, ride the gondola to the top of the mountain, which rises nearly 4,000 feet high. On a clear day, the view spans four states and several mountain ranges, such as the Berkshires of Massachusetts and the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
