Pembine, Wisconsin: Waterfall Capital of the Northwoods

Pembine is tucked away in the Wisconsin Northwoods, about 80 miles north of Green Bay. It's a quiet, secluded little town. The Menominee River runs just east of Pembine and feeds into some beautiful waterfalls, which have earned the region the nickname “Waterfall Capital of Wisconsin.” The falls are surrounded by hiking trails, and many have parking nearby.

The area’s forests are playgrounds for snowmobilers, cross-country skiers, and snowshoers. Hundreds of miles of groomed trails crisscross Marinette County, and local retailers offer equipment rentals.

Sometimes you don't get what you paid for Hosted a 50th wedding anniversary party for my in-laws this past weekend and wish I could say it was a great experience. From the time we initially booked it was a constant struggle to have any communication with an event planner to actually make the plans. We had to deal with 3-4 different people and my husband was always the one to have to initiate any contact to find out what was going on and make sure plans were actually moving forward. I understand that there was some staff turnover but that would be up to management to ensure that events were still being handled. On the day of the party, there was no event planner on site. The only staff working our party was the caterer and 2 other bartenders. These ladies really busted their butts for us, but they definitely could have used more help. Maddie was amazing, she had so much on her plate but was always checking in to see what we needed. She definitely deserves a big raise for all she seems to do there. Another thing we noticed is that the Summer Salon has no tapper in the bar...the girls were having to lug pitchers of beer from down stairs and then they were left to sit on the bar...which made for a lot of warm beer that people weren't too enthused to drink. Seems that a simple solution to that would be to bring the keg upstairs and place it in a barrel of ice. Just sitting a bunch of pitchers on the bar to get warm seemed a bit ridiculous. We also had issues with members of our party not having rooms ready at check in time, or not having a room at all that they had already reserved in advance. My husband was running around all night trying to address these issues when he should have been enjoying the celebration for his parents. We had people that ended up having to leave early to drive home 2 hours because the room they booked was somehow no longer available. Having a manager or event planner on sight during the actual event would have been helpful. I dislike leaving a negative review, but for the price we paid, we expected more than what we got. The place has so much potential to be great, but I feel like there needs to be better management for that to happen. The staff that did show up there were great, and did the best they could with what they had available to them. Again, another big shout out to Maddie, who was wonderful to work with.

Hot tub is STILL closed! Understaffed. Fun golf course, tho! Beautiful building and scenery. My husband and I came to celebrate our 20th anniversary this weekend. We were really looking forward to the updates since new ownership, as we haven't been there in probably 15 years. The room was nice, but everything else was understaffed. Their website is outdated, so when I read that we should meet at the Pro shop to pick up our rented UTV, the Pro shop was closed. I then walked down to where I saw the UTVs parked, 15 minutes later, a young man picked us up in a golf cart just to take us BACK to the front desk (where everybody said the website is wrong - ok, please get it updated!) where our UTV was brought to us. We had to ask for maps, etc. (Having not taken the trails in over a decade, some direction would've been nice.) Trying to make reservations at the Steakhouse on Saturday night took more effort than necessary as well. After standing at the "Please Wait To Be Seated" sign for a hostess for 20 minutes, we were finally seated, only for 2 other full tables of people tell us that they'd been waiting for almost 2 hours for their food. It was already after 8:00 and didn't feel like waiting any longer, so luckily The Boundary Waters was able to acommodate us, as they also did on Friday. One of the biggest let downs was that the hot tub was STILL out of order (it didn't work when we were here 15 years ago, too! Then WHY is there water in it??). The golf was nice and easy to get on the course. I think this resort is overpriced and I'm not sure what the resort fee covered, as we still had to pay for golf and utv-ing. We won't be back for quite some time.

Sucked, sucked, sucked!!! Trip sucked! When things ran out at breakfast they said what was there was all they had. When we asked for a few towels they said room service had gone home. When we asked for utv/atvs to rent they said you had to give them weeks notice. We asked for the horseshoes so we could play, they said they no longer had them, they didn’t have cornhole or any of the other yard games. Their “all day” coffee and hot chocolate was not even warm and they said they couldn’t make more. The rooms were big and all the equipment worked, but all tv went out many time. The beds were very uncomfortable. There was nothing to do around there. We wanted to rent a pontoon boat but again we had to give a long notice.
