Inn at a Glance: The Greenfield Inn

Manchester, New Hampshire: Large New England City Near Boston and National Forest

Manchester can be easy to overlook in the shadow of its more prominent New England neighbor, Boston. But lately it’s been getting more attention: Forbes put Manchester on its list of America’s Best Cheap Cities, and it’s New Hampshire’s largest city by population. Because there is no sales tax in the state, visitors often come here to shop. You can head to Merrimack Premium Outlets about a 20-minute drive away, or stroll to the shops located throughout historic downtown. Elm Street is a good place to cap off a day of browsing—there are a number of bars and restaurants open into the wee hours.

In town, there’s the Verizon Wireless Arena, home of the Manchester Monarchs professional hockey team and a frequent tour stop for big-ticket musicians. Nearby, the Currier Museum of Art showcases work from Picasso, Monet, and Georgia O’Keeffe, among others

For a look at Manchester’s past, hop on the Rockingham Recreational Trail, a 26.5-mile biking and running route dotted with railroad structures left over from the old Boston & Maine Railroad. The mountainous landscape offers more hiking and biking opportunities nearby, too. Bear Brook State Park spans more than 100,000 acres and is about 15 miles from downtown. In Campton, a one-hour drive north, sits the much larger White Mountain National Forest. Here, campers, skiers, and hikers enjoy panoramic views—most of the park’s major peaks rise 4,000 feet or higher.
