Inn at a Glance: The Inn at Union Pier

The three buildings that make up The Inn at Union Pier date back to the 1920s, giving this romantic retreat historical character. Some of the original hardwood floors still bear the outlines of old floor plans. Danish and Swedish antiques decorate the 16 guest rooms, some of which have Swedish-style fireplaces built 80–120 years ago. These fireplaces are functioning well and will function depending on the weather. Located within minutes of the inn, guests can partake in wine tasting rooms, microbreweries, distillery, shops, and restaurants.

  • Warm up in front of a wood-burning fireplace
  • Satisfy taste buds with a $25 dining credit to Timothy’s Restaurant
  • Free breakfast: Seasonal menus may include dishes such as apple crisp and pumpkin pancakes.
  • Local flavors: Michigan wines are served with popcorn each evening.
  • Indulgent escape: The outdoor hot tub is open all year as well as the sauna.
  • Things to do: Lake Michigan is just a few minutes’ walk away.

Union Pier, Michigan: Charming Hamlet on the Shores of Lake Michigan

Union Pier belongs to the cluster of southwestern Michigan communities known as Harbor Country, which hugs the coast for 15 miles. This lakefront stretch just north of the Indiana-Michigan border is especially popular for city dwellers coming from Chicago, about 75 miles away.

In the 1870s, cargo boats docked at Union Pier before shipping loads of timber across Lake Michigan to Chicago. Tourism has long since surpassed the timber trade in Harbor Country’s charming beach towns such as New Buffalo, where the quaint streets are lined with antique shops and galleries. At Warren Dunes State Park, hiking trails become paths for cross-country skiing in the winter.
