Pacific Northwest Lodge with Waterfront Cabins in Deschutes National Forest

Nestled in the Deschutes National Forest at the Cascade Mountains foothills, Suttle Lake has been attracting outdoorsmen since the 1920s, when the site became renowned as one of Oregon’s only lakes that supported runs of sockeye salmon. Today, The Lodge at Suttle Lake presides over the lake’s eastern shore, offering elegant yet rustic accommodations amid a mountain wilderness. Sunset magazine called the lodge the “best for a romantic splurge” in the west, praising the resort for its upscale restaurant, its endless list of activities, and its luxurious spa, where you can use an included $100 credit.

The lodge’s standard or deluxe suites and lofted guest rooms offer sweeping views of the lake and the soaring pines of the surrounding forest. Standalone 792-square-foot waterfront cabins come equipped with stone fireplaces and private decks.

In the main lodge’s great room, guests gather amid wood carvings and a large fireplace to enjoy a daily wine-and-cheese social in the afternoon. If you opt for the gift basket, you'll also receive chocolates, biscotti, cookies, and dried fruit to enjoy at your leisure. When more substantial hunger pangs hit, the Boathouse Restaurant supplies Northwest-inspired steaks and seafood as well as a spectacular view of the lake. The lodge provides plenty of ways to enjoy the landscape. You can opt for rental snowshoes to explore the mountain trails, or head to nearby Hoodoo ski area for downhill skiing through the Cascades (opening day is November 29).

Sisters, Oregon: Sleepy Frontier Town Close to Skiing and Fishing Spots

Situated on the east side of the Cascades in the popular Metolius River recreation area, Sisters takes its name from the Three Sisters mountains looming to the west. Each of the sisters is a volcanic, snow-capped peak that exceeds 10,000 feet in elevation.

The area around Sisters attracts outdoorsy types year-round. Winter is a quieter, but no less abundant season to fish for steelhead trout in the area’s multitude of lakes, rivers, and streams. Minutes away, the Hoodoo ski area offers day and night nordic and downhill skiing as well as snowboarding, sledding, and tubing. At nearby Three Creek Lake Nordic Trails, miles of well-marked trails allow for a full day’s worth of snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.
