Escondido, California: Historical City Amid Mountains and Forest Reserves
The city of Escondido is situated between San Diego, Los Angeles, and the Pacific Coast. Its rural surroundings—which once belonged to a Mexican ranch—create an ideal backdrop for the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Here, you can see giraffes, rhinos, and cheetahs on a safari or fly through the trees via ziplines. On the city’s edge is the Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve, known for its towering oak trees and coastal sage shrub. Hike or bike the 11 miles and take in views of the nearby Palomar Mountain Ridge.
Near the center of Escondido is the California Center for the Arts, where you can catch a concert or play. It’s also home to a museum with three art galleries and a sculpture court. From here, head southeast to Queen Califia’s Magical Park, the only sculpture garden by French New Realist artist Niki de Saint Phalle. Its nine colorful, large-scale sculptures draw inspiration from California’s mystic and cultural roots.
