English Tudor–Style B & B Overlooking Upper Rapids
After stag hunting, Saxon royals often retired to the Bell Inn in Finedon, England, whose history dates back nearly 1,000 years. The English Tudor–style estate served as inspiration to hoteliers William Schoellkopf and Charles Peabody, who sought to essentially re-create the inn near Niagara Falls in the early 20th century. In August of 1923, the Tudor-style Red Coach Inn opened its doors. The AAA Three Diamond–rated, 3.5-story B & B sits directly adjacent to the Upper Rapids of Niagara Falls. As the Red Coach Inn’s website states, you’ll be so close to the falls “you can hear the roar.”
Niagara Falls’ nickname is The Honeymoon Capital of the World, and The Red Coach Inn often plays host to romantic vacations. The inn was recently featured on an episode of The Office as a honeymoon hot spot for newlyweds Jim and Pam. The guest rooms—each named after an English village—blend antique furnishings with modern amenities, and most windows look out to the frothy Upper Rapids of the falls. Guests can slip into waterproof barrels before floating in the jets of the in-room jacuzzi tub.
Each morning, head to the Fireside Room for a complimentary breakfast. The award-winning restaurant serves entrees such as belgian waffles and steak and eggs. After filling up, you can stroll the scenic grounds, located just 500 yards from the brink of Niagara Falls.
Niagara Falls, New York: Spectacular Waterfalls at United States–Canada Border
Encompassing more than 400 acres, Niagara Falls State Park functions as a natural border between Canada and the United States. More than a million bathtubs' worth of water cascades down Niagara Falls every second. There are pedestrian bridges and observation decks on the New York side that look out onto Horseshoe Falls and American Falls, where water spills over jagged cliffs. The most invigorating view might be from the Hurricane Deck—a wooden platform located 20 feet from Bridal Veil Falls. Access the platform by taking the Cave of the Winds tour, during which professional guides lead poncho-clad visitors to Bridal Veil Falls via wooden pathways.
