5-Star Jungle Resort with Mineral Pools Overlooking Arenal Volcano
The Springs Resort & Spa sits atop a neighboring ridge just across the valley from Arenal, where it overlooks breathtaking views of the famous volcano. The paradise-like, 5-star resort echoes the surrounding landscape with colorful bromeliads, tiered waterfalls, and dozens of lagoon-style pools. The setting is so romantic that it was chosen for a group date night on the 2011 season of ABC’s The Bachelor. Whenever you’re not canoodling, make sure you’re keeping an eye out for the property’s other “guests”—ocelots, monkeys, and sloths that live on the resort’s preserve.
- Stunning architecture: The property’s main building feels like a cross between a castle and a zen temple, surrounded by a handful of swimming pools.
- All-natural pampering: Mineral hot springs feed many onsite pools, and the spa uses volcanic clays and rainforest-botanical extracts.
- Dine with a stunning view of the volcano at Las Ventanas restaurant—or “The Windows”—which is enclosed by wall-to-wall plate glass.
- Where you’ll stay: Guest rooms look out onto dramatic views. Alta Vista rooms frame the peak through triple-arched windows. Villa Calatea and presidential suites complement the view with private plunge pools surrounded by sun decks, and hammocks.
- Nearby activities: Go tubing, kayaking, rock climbing, or horseback riding (extra fees apply) at the Club Rio Outdoor Center along the Arenal riverfront.
- Recent award: Springs Resort & Spa was named the no. 2 hotel in all of Central America during TripAdvisor’s 2015 Travelers’ Choice awards, and recently was named to the TripAdvisor Hall of Fame
La Fortuna, Costa Rica: Arenal Volcano, Soothing Hot Springs, and Exotic Birds
Until very recently, Arenal was Costa Rica’s most active volcano. It’s dormant now, but the surrounding region is no less stunning, with hiking trails, fertile rainforests, whitewater rapids for kayaking, and a lake that’s perfect for watersports. And many tourists still come to see the volcano, which punctuates the varied topography of Arenal Volcano National Park.
The park contains a diverse ecosystem near the center of Costa Rica. Birders come here from all over the world to glimpse some 850 species of feathery friends, including the rare and striking Resplendent Quetzal. The rich landscape is marked by waterfalls and a few rivers ideal for whitewater rafting, most notably Rio Toro. The park is also a prime spot to take a scenic hike through dense cloud forest by way of hanging bridges.
A more rugged trek awaits at Sendero Coladas, or Lava Flow Trail, which leads to a field of jagged volcanic rock that formed after the eruption decades ago. Due to its geothermal activity, the park is also home to a number of natural hot springs. These therapeutic springs are a nice spot to unwind after a hike or a sing-off with a howler monkey.
