Ashcroft, British Columbia: Outdoor Adventure in Former Gold-Rush Town
The Cascade Mountains rise up on either side of Ashcroft, a town on the banks of the Thompson River. The larger-than-life setting supports a population of less than 2,000 but welcomes thousands of outdoor enthusiasts every year. Anglers cast out for steelhead salmon on the Thompson River and reel in whopping catches of rainbow trout on Loon Lake. The river and the lake welcome rafters and kayakers as well.
On land, you can mountain bike and hike down pine-fringed trails, which open up for snowmobiling in winter. Horseback riding is big in the area—as it was in Ashcroft’s early days as gold-rush town. For other hints of local history, stop by the old town hall (now an opera house) or some of the town’s first churches, which date back to the 19th century.
