Guests at Treehouse Lodge get a bird’s-eye view of the Amazon rainforest. Treetop bungalows sit 34–67 feet off the ground—the perfect height for spotting squirrel monkeys, macaws, and other native wildlife in the surrounding canopy. All structures at the lodge are enclosed in fine mosquito netting to keep bugs out without obstructing the view. Swinging bridges and walkways connect each bungalow to the main lodge, where guests will enjoy three Peruvian-style meals a day.
- Rugged luxury: All bungalows feature crisp linens and private bathrooms with sinks, toilets, and showers (but no hot water).
- Free excursions: Choose from nearly a dozen tours, including jungle walks and dolphin-watching cruises booked at the hotel.
- Fish for piranha in the local waterways.
- Eco-friendly features: solar panels and a four-tank water-purification system
- What to bring: A recommended packing list can be found here.
Nauta, Peru: Center of Ecotourism in the Amazon
A few years ago, getting to Nauta involved a rigorous jungle trek that could take upward of 12 hours. But all that changed in 2005, with the completion of a road linking the small town to the provincial capital of Iquitos. Now it takes just 1.5 hours to drive to Nauta; as a result, the town has blossomed into a hub of ecotourism.
Nauta sits on the banks of the Marañón River, a tributary of the mighty Amazon. You can book a scenic tour of the river through your resort or local vendors. You might even spot some local marine life, such as the pink-skinned Amazon river dolphin. Just across the river lies Pacaya–Samiria National Reserve, one of the largest protected areas in the country. It’s home to a slew of threatened and endangered species, including black alligators, giant river otters, and manatees.
