“Remote” doesn’t begin to describe Two Fox Cabins. You’re just as likely to spot deer, foxes, or bighorn sheep as you are humans in this part of southern Colorado, where the closest city (Pueblo) is 60 miles away. The property sits along the meandering Cuchara River, offering access to trails in the surrounding Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

La Veta, Colorado: Welcoming Small Town amid the Sangre de Cristo Mountains

La Veta lies in Huerfano County in southern Colorado, named after the Huerfano Butte, the stubby remnant of an ancient volcano about 20 minutes north of town. La Veta is small, with a population of less than 1,000, but you’ll still find a bookstore, antique shops, several art galleries, a wine bar, and a coffee shop.

South of La Veta is the town of Cuchara, which is completely surrounded by a section of San Isabel National Forest. The Spanish Peaks—a pair of mountains that can be seen from as far away as Colorado Springs—dominate this part of the park, with the taller western peak hitting 13,600 feet. You can experience the landscape by hiking around the Spanish Peaks Wilderness Area. For a less strenuous yet still scenic activity, just drive south down Highway 12 (known as the Highway of Legends) until you get to Trinidad. You’ll pass by lakes and through charming towns and dense forests while cruising down one of Colorado’s most scenic routes.
