Itinerary

  • Day 1: Depart the US for Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Take an overnight flight from the US to Amsterdam, the Netherlands’ picturesque capital. With a centre that’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Amsterdam is often called ‘the Venice of the North’ because of its large number of canals. But hopping on a bike to explore the likes of the Rijksmuseum art gallery and Royal Palace is just as common as stepping aboard a sightseeing barge.

  • Day 2: Day at Leisure in Amsterdam. Having cleared immigration, it’s just 30 minutes from Amsterdam’s Schiphol International Airport by train or road to the lovingly-characterful city centre. A great place to start is the De Wallen neighbourhood, which is packed with narrow medieval alleys leading to the likes of the Oude Kerk (Old Church) and the red-bricked Stock Exchange building. Then board a sightseeing barge for a canal tour, to relax as you drift among fascinating historic districts. Our tip, seek out the longer tours, lasting around 75 minutes, to truly get a feel for the city. You’ll find most operators at the northern end of De Wallen, close to the main train station.

  • Day 3: Day at Leisure in Amsterdam. A sombre but unmissable attraction is the Anne Frank House, a traditional seventeenth century structure which took on new meaning when it became the hiding place for the diarist’s family during the Second World War. Follow this up with a tour of the Rijksmuseum. Containing more than one million objects, the Rijksmuseum is probably best known for its works by Van Gogh – although there’s also a dedicated Van Gogh Museum for hardcore fans.

  • Day 4: Travel from Amsterdam to Berlin, Germany by Train. Begin the day by royal appointment with an invitation (or at least a ticket) to visit Amsterdam’s Royal Palace. The home of royals since the early 1800s, a visit to the palace provides an intriguing insight into life in the Dutch royal court, including the grand Citizens Hall. In the evening, you’ll head to Amsterdam Central Station to board the ‘Good Night Train’ to Berlin, for the 8 hour and 45 minute journey.

  • Day 5: Day at Leisure in Berlin. The capital of Germany since reunification in 1990, Berlin is a city built upon layers of history as you’ll discover on Museum Island. Home to several major institutions of international importance, including the history collections of the Alte Museum and bust of Nefertiti within the exhibits of the Neue Museum. Next head to the Reichstag, home of the German parliament. It symbolically combines old and new architecture, best seen from its roof terrace. Follow this up with a stroll through the immense Tiergarten park, where President John F Kennedy gave his famous ‘Ich bin ein Berliner’ speech.

  • Day 6: Day at Leisure in Berlin. Do something which wasn’t possible for decades, by passing through the Brandenberg Gate, on route to Berlin’s Holocaust Memorial. Made of blocks of stone cut to different heights, it’s a deliberately disorientating site, with a fascinating museum hidden underground where Hitler once had his bunker. Head back east next to Alexanderplatz, home to the shining TV tower, Rotes Rathaus (Red Town Hall), and a great selection of shops and cafes for an afternoon of wandering.

  • Day 7: Day at leisure in Berlin. Stop by the Star-Spangled Banner flying from Checkpoint Charlie, a former crossing point between East and West Berlin. Then explore the Berlin Wall Memorial, featuring some of the last remaining sections of wall in their original place, alongside explanatory panels. Continue the outdoor theme at the East Side Gallery, said to be the largest exterior art gallery in the world, with over 100 works on display. End the day at Prater Garten, considered Berlin’s oldest beer garden and the best place to wrap up your tour of two of Europe’s finest capitals.

  • Day 8: Fly back to the US from Berlin. Leave Berlin for a flight bound for the US.

We have not traveled yet, but appreciated him getting us the best options available without much additional cost, but when booking you should know there is a good chance you might have to pay a little more for your flight.
