Begin your 9-day 8-night tour in Vienna, where over 2 days you’ll have the chance to discover just what inspired so many artists and musicians over the centuries. Continuing by train to Salzburg, your Old Town explorations might include the birthplace of Mozart, while Innsbruck provides the opportunity to admire the Alps from near and far. Last but not least, you’ll cross the border into Germany for 2 nights in Munich, a city with a history as long and fascinating as any in Europe, having welcomed everyone from composer Richard Strauss, soccer international Franz Beckenbauer, and film director Werner Herzog.
The Itinerary
9-day/8-Night Austria & Germany Vacation:
- Day 1: Fly overnight from US to Vienna.
- Board your overnight flight from the US to Vienna, capital of Austria. A former imperial city, Vienna still echoes to the sound of this time. Famed for its glamourous New Year’s Eve balls, the ‘City of Music’ has been home to many celebrated composers, and is so awash with important sights it was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Day 2: Day at leisure in Vienna.
- Situated on the western side of the city center, the elegant Rathausplatz (Town Hall Square) is a great place to begin exploring Vienna’s artistic past. From here you could take any path to discover a wealth of attractions, but we suggest drifting through Volksgarten Park and past the Hofburg Palace to the Schmetterlinghaus, an art nouveau greenhouse filled with butterflies. Following lunch at Café Sacher or a similar august institution, make use of the city’s fine public transport to reach Schönbrunn Palace. Containing over 1,440 rooms, it was the summer residence of Austro-Hungarian emperors for almost 200 years.
- Day 3: Day at leisure in Vienna.
- Start the morning by standing on the observation deck of the 827-feet high Donauturm (Danube Tower), for exquisite views across Vienna. Follow this up with a boat trip along the River Danube complete with commentary, before taking a walk through the impressive Prater amusement park in the Leopoldstadt neighborhood. The park is home to the Riesenrad, or Giant Ferris Wheel, one of the oldest in the world.
- Day 4: Travel from Vienna to Salzburg.
- Depart Vienna by train for Salzburg, another city packed with cultural delights. Direct rail services take just three hours, providing ample opportunity to take in the medieval and baroque buildings of the Altstadt (Old Town), and classically-styled structures of the Neustadt.
- Day 5: Day at Leisure in Salzburg.
- For a chance to learn more about the composer Mozart, head straight for either his Birthplace Museum or his Residence Museum, siting on opposite sides of the River Salzach. Rental bikes offer the chance to tour more of the riverside, or head instead to the ancient lanes of the Altstadt, a picture-postcard location filled with a great mix of cafes, shops, and historic sights. End the day with some traditional Austrian cuisine, or by enjoying a classical concert at the Haus für Mozart concert hall.
- Day 6: Travel from Salzburg to Innsbruck.
- Return to Salzburg Hauptbahnhof railway station to catch a direct train to Innsbruck. Connected to Salzburg in around two hours, Innsbruck has a commanding position in the Wipp Valley, with the Alps rising behind. Combining a historic heart filled with charming buildings with chances to hike in the summer and ski during the winter, it has to be one of our favorite European cities. Once you’re acquainted with the riverside old town, don’t miss the chance to ride the Nordkette aerial tramway for panoramic views across the city.
- Day 7: Travel from Innsbruck to Munich, Germany.
- Absorb your last impressions of Austria as you board the train to Munich in Germany. Average journey times are just two hours, with border checks carried out while on the move. The capital of Bavaria, Munich is best-known for its Oktoberfest beer festival, but whatever time of year you visit ,you’ll find plenty to occupy yourself, as you’ll soon discover.
- Day 8: Day at leisure in Munich.
- Marienplatz, the city’s main square, is the obvious place to start any tour of Munich. Coincide your visit with 11am or 12pm to catch its Glockenspiel clock in action, depicting stories from the city’s history via 43 bells and 32 human-sized figures. Then head to the Kunstareal Quarter for your fill of Old Masters at the Alte Pinakothek art gallery, before checking out the local produce at Viktualienmarkt, the largest market in the city.
- Day 9: Fly back from Munich to US airports.
- Be sure to arrive at Munich’s International Airport in good time for your flight back to the US. Although your tour of Austria and Germany is ending, the memories are sure to live on long after your return.
