The Itinerary
8-day/7-Night Barcelona, Madrid & Lisbon Trip
- Day 1: Fly overnight from US to Barcelona.
- Your vacation across the Iberian Peninsula begins with an overnight flight from the US to Barcelona, Spain’s second city. Best known for the Sagrada Familia church, the soaring, still-unfinished architectural masterpiece of local artist Antoni Gaudi, Barcelona is also the focal point of Catalan regional culture, typified by its own language, cuisine, and heritage.
- Day 2: Day at Leisure in Barcelona.
- Begin your explorations of Barcelona by walking at least part of the one-mile pedestrianized boulevard known as La Rambla, the shopping street also featuring the Gran Teatre del Liceu opera house. At the streets southern end, you’ll find a monument to Christopher Colombus and the city’s aquarium – one of the best in the world. Then jump on the swift metro system to the city’s stand-out star – Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia.
- Day 3: Day at Leisure in Barcelona.
- Barcelona’s fine weather will help ensure a tour of the grand Parc de la Ciutadella is remembered for all the right reasons. Then head to one of the finest urban beaches in the world, Playa de la Barceloneta, combining soft sand with great art and an LA-like vibe.
- Day 4: Train transfer from Barcelona to Madrid
- Transfer to Barcelona’s Sants train station to catch one of the highspeed direct services which connect it with Madrid daily. Lasting just 2.5 hours on average, you’ll have plenty of time to settle into your hotel before experiencing your first hours in a city which has been capital for almost half a millennium.
- Day 5: Day at Leisure in Madrid.
- Madrid is home to a trio of galleries art lovers won’t want to miss: the Prado, Reina Sofia and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. Sometimes called the Golden Triangle, together they house some of the most important artworks in history. Elsewhere, the Royal Palace remains the official residence of Spanish monarchs, and as one of the largest in western Europe, tours inside make for a fascinating afternoon.
- Day 6: Coach transfer from Madrid to Lisbon.
- Cross the open border between Spain and Portugal by road during your seven-hour coach journey between Madrid and the Portuguese capital. Situated on the Atlantic Ocean, Lisbon isn’t short of attractions either, being the second-oldest city in Europe after Athens. On arrival, you should still have time to admire some of its top attractions. These include its cathedral, constructed in 1147, and the Monument of the Discoveries, in the evocative Belem neighborhood.
- Day 7: Day trip to Sintra.
- A royal retreat until republicanism took hold, your day trip to Sintra, in the hills outside of Lisbon, will see you visit the uniquely-styled Pena Palace. It also includes the westernmost point of continental Europe at Cabo da Roca, and the town of Cascais, a coastal community with a busy marina and sights including the momentous Nossa Senhora da Luz citadel fortress. At the end of your tour, you return to Lisbon to overnight.
- Day 8: Fly back to US from Lisbon.
- Say ‘adeus’ and ‘adios’ to the Iberian Peninsula on boarding your flight back to the US from Lisbon’s centrally-located international airport.
Lisbon: Sintra, Pena Palace, Cabo da Roca, & Cascais Tour is included from Lisbon.
