The Itinerary

9-day/8-Night Transylvania Romania Vacation

Vacation in some of the most historic and scenic parts of Romania with this 9-day, 8-night itinerary. Starting with two nights in the capital, Bucharest, you’ll have the opportunity to see the city’s biggest sights before continuing to Transylvania. A region of beautiful old towns and soaring mountains, have your camera at the ready as you tour undeniably wondrous towns from Sibiu and Cluj-Napoca to Sighisoara and Brasov. While here, be sure to visit Dracula’s Castle in Bran and the nearby brown bear sanctuary, before returning to the bright lights of Bucharest.

  • Day 1: Fly overnight from the US to Bucharest, Romania.
    • Depart the US on an overnight flight to Bucharest. One of Europe’s hidden gems, the capital of Romania is a stunning blend of architectural marvels, historic wonders, and atmospheric shopping streets. Celebrated as ‘the Paris of the east,’ Bucharest has thrown off the cloak of its communist years to become a thriving and fascinating destination.
  • Day 2: Transfer to City Center & stay in Bucharest.
    • Arrive into Bucharest’s Henri Coandă International Airport following your overnight flight from the US, and transfer to your hotel in the city center, catching your first glimpses of the Romanian capital as you do so. Once refreshed, spend the afternoon amid some of the city’s grandest boulevards. None are grander than Boulevard Unirii, leading to the Ceausescu era Palace of the Parliament building, which lays claim to being the second-largest building in the world after The Pentagon. Step inside for a tour of its impressive furnishings next, before visiting the nearby National Cathedral and crossing the river to Cismigiu Gardens for sunset.
  • Day 3: Day at leisure in Bucharest.
    • Continue your explorations of the Romanian capital by delving back into the country’s royal history at the Royal Palace, now housing the National Museum of Art. From there, head to the Romanian Athenaeum, a concert hall styled in the neoclassical manner, before strolling towards the city’s Jewish Quarter. Here you might choose to pause to sample covrigi, a pretzel-like bread common as a street food. Then take a short stroll along the river back towards the heart of modern Bucharest.
  • Day 4: Travel from Bucharest to Sibiu.
    • Having obtained the keys of your rental vehicle, leave Bucharest by road for the five- hour panorama-heavy journey to Sibiu. It’s a town dating back to medieval times located in the heart of Dracula country – Transylvania. On arrival, check into your hotel for the night before heading to the perfectly-preserved Old Town. Split between upper and lower towns, it’s a place where cobbled streets combine effortlessly with pastel-colored buildings occupied by artist’s shops, cafes, and Romania’s oldest museum - Brukenthal Palace.
  • Day 5: Travel from Sibiu to Cluj-Napoca.
    • Using a rental car gives you the chance to discover the very best of the region, as you’ll find following the road north for approximately 2.5 hours to Cluj-Napoca. Another town bathed in historic wonders, we recommend you spend the afternoon amid its main squares. Popular with locals as well as visitors, they are filled with stunning buildings and an array of places to stop and absorb it all.
  • Day 6: Travel from Cluj-Napoca to Sighisoara.
    • If you thought Old Town splendor couldn’t get any better, think again following the three-hour drive to Sighisoara. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, be sure not to miss the famed Covered Staircase and Clock Tower, before admiring Sighisoara Citadel of what is one of southeastern Europe’s few remaining inhabited fortified towns.
  • Day 7: Drive from Sighisoara to Brasov.
    • Two hours from Sighisoara lies your next destination of Brasov, a town with a dramatic location beside the forested slopes of the Carpathian Mountains. A place where fact and fiction converge, you won’t want to miss the optional tour of Bran Castle and Rasnov Fortress. Better known as Dracula’s Castle, Bran Castle is filled with furniture collected by Romania’s Queen Marie (in addition to more than a few vampire-themed souvenirs), while Rasnov Fortress spans more than 800 years of history and offers superb vistas across snow-topped peaks.
  • Day 8: Day at leisure in Brasov.
    • Spend your second day in Brasov getting close to one of Transylvania’s most enigmatic residents, its brown bears. Optional tours starting and ending in Brasov make this really easy, with the choice of a tour to the 170-acre Liberty Brown Bear Sanctuary or a small group brown bear-watching experience.
  • Day 9: Drive from Brasov to Bucharest and depart for the US.
    • Return south to Bucharest, a journey of around three hours. Having dropped off your hire car, it will be time to check in for your flight back to the US.
