Itinerary At A Glance
7-Day London & Edinburgh Vacation
-
Day 1: Depart the US for London, UK. Take an overnight flight from the US to the British capital, London, a city which has been attracting the great and the good to its wealth of winding streets for well over 2,000 years. The political, royal, and economic heart of the United Kingdom, London boasts some of the world’s most important museum collections, finest buildings, and a staggering history. No wonder Samuel Johnson, author of the first English dictionary, said “when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.”
-
Day 2: Day at Leisure in London. With so many treasures waiting to be revealed, knowing precisely where to start in London can be the hardest decision to make. But heading to The View from the Shard, the observation deck of Western Europe’s tallest building, can never be a bad decision. Here you can take in the magnificence of London in all its glory. Then jump aboard one of the regular sightseeing cruises which sail along the River Thames to the Tate Modern gallery. Not only does it contain one of the best contemporary art collections in Europe, but it sits beside Shakespeare’s Globe and opposite Saint Paul’s Cathedral, one of London’s most important landmarks.
-
Day 3: Day at Leisure in London. Begin at the gates of Buckingham Palace, the British monarch’s official residence, where the Changing of the Guard ceremony takes place several times a week to the sound of marching bands. Then head to the Tower of London, home to the crown jewels used during coronations for hundreds of years. Enjoy traditional fish and chips for lunch, before continuing your exploration of London at Camden Lock market, where chatting with locals is all part of the fun.
-
Day 4: Evening Departure for Edinburgh, Scotland, on the Caledonian Sleeper Train. Your evening Caledonian Sleeper train departure gives you another day in the British capital. Be sure to take in Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, perhaps from the unusual vantagepoint of the London Eye. Conclude your time in London with a matinee performance of one of the West Ends top shows, before heading to Euston Station a short Tube ride away for your 11.45pm departure. Boarding begins around one hour before. You overnight in one of the Caledonian Sleeper’s newly refurbished classic rooms consisting of twin bunk beds, sleeping kit, complimentary Wi-Fi, and in-room wash basin.
-
Day 5: Day at Leisure in Edinburgh. The Caledonian Sleeper arrives into Edinburgh, the equally-majestic Scottish capital at 7.30am. With a good night of rest behind you, you are perfectly placed – literally and metaphorically – to discover all “Auld Reekie” (or “Old Smokey”) has to offer. This includes the Palace of Holyrood House, the monarch’s Scottish residence, and Edinburgh Castle, home to the world-famous Military Tattoo. Connected by the Royal Mile, both are open to the public. In the evening, be sure to check out some of Edinburgh’s most popular nightspots, such as The Sheep Heid Inn, established in 1360 and visited by everyone from poet Robert Burns to the late Queen Elizabeth II.
-
Day 6: Day at Leisure in Edinburgh. Continue the royal theme by visiting the neighbourhood of Leith to step aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia, moored here since her retirement in 1997 having sailed an impressive one million nautical miles. Now a museum, visitors can tour five decks, including Queen Elizabeth II’s former bedroom, and state dining room, before having a cup of tea. Then make your way to the Royal Botanic Garden, comprising ponds, woodland garden, and Chinese hillside among other attractions.
-
Day 7: Fly back to US from Edinburgh. Return to the US from Edinburgh, without the need to retrace your steps south to London first.
9-Day London, Edinburgh, & York Vacation
-
Day 1: Depart the US for London, UK. Fly overnight to London from the US and make your way to the heart of the British capital. Along the way, you’re sure to recognise street names and attractions, from Sherlock Holmes’ Baker Street, to Hyde Park, and Kensington Palace, home to the late Diana Princess of Wales. Ever corner of London seems to have a tale to tell, so you won’t want to miss a minute of it.
-
Day 2: Day at Leisure in London. Begin at one of London’s most iconic buildings, Saint Paul’s Cathedral, which is considered so important to the capital that views towards it are protected by law. Inside, where royals including Prince William have married, you’ll find hundreds of years’ worth of treasures, including the Whispering Gallery. Then cross the River Thames via Millennium Bridge to the Tate Modern, whose extraordinary contemporary art collection can’t be ignored. But the area has lots more to explore, from plays at Shakespeare’s Globe to sightseeing cruises along the river that made London what it is today.
-
Day 3: Day at Leisure in London. Catch the tolling bells of Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament before heading north via Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery to Buckingham Palace, home to King Charles III. Take in the Changing of the Guard Ceremony, then take a stroll in the two Royal Parks that stand beside it, St James’s and Green parks. Later in the day, get a bird’s eye view of the city from The View from the Shard, the UK’s tallest observation deck.
-
Day 4: Travel to Edinburgh on the Caledonian Sleeper Train Service. Since the Caledonian Sleeper train doesn’t leave until the evening, there is time to check out the engineering of the Victorian-era Tower Bridge, before heading back several more centuries to the Tower of London, which includes the vaults containing the British crown jewels. Next, take a tour of London’s Sky Garden, before ending your explorations amid the buzzing stalls of Borough Market. Boarding for the Caledonian Sleeper begins approximately one hour before its departure at 11.45pm, so we advise enjoying a good meal before arriving at Euston Station. You will stay in one of the trains classic rooms, which feature twin bunk beds, comfortable Glencraft mattresses and an in-room wash basin.
-
Day 5: Day at Leisure in Edinburgh, Scotland. You will arrive into central Edinburgh at 7.30am to discover a city which is very different to London. Make your focus the nearby Royal Mile, which stretches from the historic rooms in the Palace of Holyrood House at one end to Edinburgh Castle at the other. The Royal Mile also passes through much of the old city, and is lined with shops, intriguing buildings, and excellent street performers sure to keep you enthralled.
-
Day 6: Day at Leisure in Edinburgh. Make the short climb to the top of Arthur’s Seat, an extinct volcano, for views stretching across this glorious city. Horror fans might then like to take a turn within The Edinburgh Dungeon. Others might prefer to sample some of Scotland’s finest drams at The Scotch Whisky Experience, before ending the day at the Scott Monument, dedicated to the memory of writer Sir Walter Scott.
-
Day 7: Travel from Edinburgh to York. Head back south across the Scottish-English border and some incredible natural landscapes on the four-hour train ride between Edinburgh and York, a beautiful city dating its founding to 71AD. Your first stop has to be the incredible York Minster, famed for its stained-glass windows. Then take a walk down The Shambles, one of the best-reserved medieval streets in Europe, with structures dating back to the fourteenth century. End the day by taking in some of the city’s remaining ancient walls.
-
Day 8: Day at Leisure in York. Stop by Clifford’s Tower, built as a look out by William the conqueror in the tenth century and offering spectacular views from its bastions and ramparts. Then take the short walk to the JORVIK Viking Centre, an immersive historical experience taking you back to the time when the Vikings ruled York. But first be sure to stop by Betty’s Café Tea House, for a traditional afternoon tea.
-
Day 9: Return to London for Your Flight to the US. Take the train from York to the centre of London, a journey of around 2.5 hours, from where you go to the airport for your return flight to the US.
