Itinerary

Day 1: Depart the US for Helsinki. Fly overnight from the US to Helsinki, Finland’s elegant capital, where wide boulevards lead to stunning neoclassical and art nouveau era architecture amid a beautiful backdrop of natural waterways.

Day 2: Day at Leisure in Helsinki. Take the opportunity to explore one of Europe’s most stylish and livable capitals. Incredibly easy to tackle on foot, it combines the most stylish modern design with a love for Finnish tradition, and everything from exceptional shopping to an unbeatable coffee culture. When it comes to sights there’s no shortage either, with the impressive cathedral on Senate Square, the eighteenth-century Suomenlinna Fortress UNESCO World Heritage Site, or the chance to cruise along the Gulf of Finland.

Day 3: Take the Santa Claus Express to Rovaniemi. Follow a second day of leisure to take in all Helsinki has to offer, you’ll head to the city’s main railway station to board the overnight sleeper train known as the Santa Claus Express. Pushing north into Finnish Lapland, this comfortable double-decker train crosses the Arctic Circle the following morning to reach the town of Rovaniemi, the home of none other than Santa Claus himself.

Day 4: Day of Leisure in Rovaniemi (Santa Claus Village Hotel). Home to 63,000 people – and more than a handful of elves – Rovaniemi is an extraordinary, otherworldly place to explore life in the land of the midnight sun. Designed with a street plan mimicking the head of a reindeer, there’s no better time to visit than early winter, since it’s one of the best times to see the Northern Lights and most winter activities are already in full operation.

Day 5: Day of Leisure in Rovaniemi (Santa Claus Village Hotel). A wonderland of excursions over the early winter months, visitors to Rovaniemi have enough activities to choose between to keep them busy for several weeks. Highlights include family-friendly reindeer and husky farm Raitola, where meeting these inquisitive creatures includes sleigh rides through the snowy forest. Those of an adventurous nature might prefer the chance to ride an ‘icekart’ around a frozen track. None can be better than the chance to spot the elusive Northern Lights, which can be done while sampling traditional Lapp cuisine.

Day 6: Day of Leisure in Rovaniemi (Santa Claus Village Hotel) Take the opportunity today to stop at Santa Claus’ Main Post Office. Not only does it receive hopeful letters from children across the globe year-round, but it’s also a fully operational mail center, giving you the chance to obtain a rare Arctic Circle postmark on your postcards home. Then experience just what Santa himself goes through with a magical ride on sleighs pulled by Santa Claus Reindeer.

Day 7: Ride by Rail Through Delightful Countryside from Rovaniemi to Kemi. Roughly an hour’s train ride southwest of Rovaniemi on Lapland’s Bothnian Bay coastline, Kemi’s inner harbor is home to the world’s largest snow castle, rebuilt each year to a new unique design. Elsewhere, the town’s Gemstone Gallery contains replicas of various European crown jewels, and Kemi Church is one of its most celebrated permanent structures. However, the six hour journey on Icebreaker Sampo is an experience not to be missed, incorporating lunch or brunch buffet, tour of the ship, sailing time, and the chance to walk on the bay’s frozen winter surface without hurrying since you’ll overnight in Kemi.

Day 8: Take the Return Train to Rovaniemi. Delight in the return rail journey from Kemi to Rovaniemi. Taking in its endless panoramas from a different viewpoint, you’ll want to have your cameras at the ready. Overnighting in a centrally-located Rovaniemi hotel, they’ll also be plenty of time to complete any last-minute souvenir shopping or discover even more of what Santa’s hometown has to offer.

Day 9: Fly from Rovaniemi to Helsinki and then fly back to the United States.
