Itinerary at a Glance
- Day 1: Fly overnight from the US to Zurich, Switzerland. Board your international transatlantic flight for Zurich, Switzerland’s largest city and a major transportation hub within a country sometimes called ‘the playground of Europe’ and ‘the land of milk and honey.
- Day 2: Train transfer from Zurich to Interlaken. Having completed immigration formalities, head to Zurich International Airport’s very own railway station for the train journey to Interlaken. Lasting less than 2.5 hours, the journey passes close to several protected areas before hugging the southern lakeshore of the Thunersee (Lake Thun), ensuring plenty of opportunity for magnificent vistas on route. On arrival, check into your night’s accommodation, then step out onto the charming streets of the city center, where the cafes offer plenty of opportunity for a pause, and the shops a great range of souvenirs.
- Day 3: Day at Leisure in Interlaken.Interlaken’s sublime position between two alpine lakes and edging the Bernese Alps has made it one of Europe’s foremost resort towns. A morning cruise on Lake Thun is perhaps the perfect way to take it all in, before stopping for a traditional Swiss lunch of fondu or potato rosti on the lakeshore. Then hop aboard the funicular train from Interlaken Ost (East) station for the short ride to Harder Kulm. Meaning ‘home mountain’, the 100-year-old train will have you close to its 1,322m summit in ten minutes, from where viewing platforms offer panoramas of some of Europe’s highest peaks: the Jungfrau, Monch, and Eiger.
- Day 4: Ride the GoldenPass Express from Interlaken to Montreux. Travel west in comfort on board the GoldenPass Express. Constructed with large picture windows and lasting less than 3.5 hours, this superb train passes through no less than three of Switzerland’s regions and a myriad of picture-perfect locations. Along the way, it makes stops at many charming towns, including Gstaad and Château-d’Oex, before arriving in Montreux where you will overnight.
- Day 5: Day at leisure in Montreux. Although attracting everyone from fashion designer Coco Chanel to Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, Montreux is small enough that exploring doesn’t feel like a chore. The lapping waters of Lake Geneva are the obvious place to start, with promenades leading pedestrians towards the waterside Chillon Castle. Having toured the interior, head to hillside Montreux Old Town, decked out with cobbled streets, winegrowers’ homes, small bistros offering great value menu options.
- Day 6: Travel from Montreux to Zermatt. A 2.5-hour journey by train from Montreux will have you arriving into the heart of Zermatt, a town with a phenomenal location below the heights of the Matterhorn. Popular with skiers during the winter months and hikers during the remains of the year, unmissable attractions focus on communing with the region’s natural beauty. The optional tour from Zermatt to Gornergrat via the Gornergrat mountain rack railway is an ideal way to do this, alongside the additional option of staying at 3100 Kulmhotel Gornergrat, the highest hotel anywhere in the Swiss Alps.
- Day 7: Admire the Matterhorn from Far and Near. Join your included tour of the Matterhorn with Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, Europe’s highest altitude aerial tramway lift. As well as uninterrupted vistas of 38 4,000 m-plus peaks and 14 glistening glaciers, it provides the chance to marvel at the eternal ice of Glacier Palace, watch a movie at the highest movie theater in Europe, and enjoy a meal in the continent’s highest restaurant. Your return journey to Zermatt, where you overnight, is included.
- Day 8: TTravel from Zermatt to Zurich and fly back to the US. Take a convenient train departure from Zermatt to Zurich International Airport Station in good time for your return flight to the US.
