The Itinerary

8-day/7-Night Milan, Florence, and Rome Vacation

  • Day 1: Travel from the US to Milan, Italy. Board an overnight flight from the US to Milan, located in Italy’s north. Known as the country’s fashion capital, Milan is also one of Europe’s most popular cultural destinations, boasting grand museum spaces containing internationally important artworks.

  • Day 2: Day at Leisure in Milan. Start your day at leisure in Milan at arguably the city’s most important structure, its Duomo (cathedral). Its impressive gothic edifice is not to be missed, nor is the chance to climb to its top (there’s also an elevator) for the spectacular views it offers. Coming a close second is the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Italy’s oldest shopping arcade, today home to the country’s finest brands. End the day with a performance at La Scala, Milan’s famed opera house.

  • Day 3: Day at Leisure in Milan. Head to the relatively plain exterior of Santa Maria delle Grazie church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose interior walls feature da Vinci’s Last Supper mural. Then turn your attention to Sforzesco Castle, whose centuries of renovations speak of Milan’s historic importance. Then enjoy the green space which surrounds the castle, one of Europe’s largest medieval citadels.

  • Day 4: Transfer to Florence. A three-hour train journey south will have you arriving into Florence, birthplace of the Renaissance and major voices including Dante Alighieri, author of The Divine Comedy. With top attractions including the Uffizi art gallery, duomo, and Ponte Vecchio all within easy reach of one another on foot, prepare for an afternoon of delights followed by a sumptuous meal at any of Florence’s celebrated restaurants.

  • Day 5: Explore Cinque Terre. Tick off another Italian must with this inclusive day trip to the five colorful cliff-edge villages of the Italian Riveria which together form Cinque Terre. Your day includes return coach transfers from Florence, followed by a boat trip along the coast (weather allowing), free time to swim in the region’s warm waters, guided tours of each of the five villages, and local mountain train rides between them. You overnight back in Florence.

  • Day 6: Travel to Rome. Another two hours on Italy’s state railway system will have you waving goodbye to Florence and hello to Rome, ‘the eternal city.’ Although built across seven hills, spend the rest of the day discovering the many ancient Roman wonders of just one – the Palatine. Here you’ll find the Colosseum, Arches of Titus and Constantine, and Forum – the very heart of the Roman Empire. To extend your explorations, just head to Nero’s cavernous Domus Aurea before hitting the side streets leading from the River Tiber for a memorial meal.

  • Day 7: Day at Leisure in Rome. Start the day at Saint Peter’s Basilica, the largest church in the world and resting place of Popes for centuries. Situated in the Vatican City, an independent state with its own police and postal service, it’s then just a short walk to the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel. Rested by a long lunch, next visit Castel Sant’Angelo on route to Piazza Navona and the Pantheon, featuring the world’s largest unsupported dome until recent times. Come evening, rest your feet with a cruise along the River Tiber taking in many of Rome’s most glorious attractions.

  • Day 8: Fly Back to the US. Transfer by train, bus, or taxi to Rome’s main airport, Leonardo da Vinci International, better known as Fiumicino Airport for your return flight to the US.
