The Itinerary
8-Day/6-Night German Christmas Market Vacation
- Day 1: Depart the US for Frankfurt, Germany. Board an overnight flight from the US to Frankfurt. Often considered a modern city because of its skyline of contemporary skyscrapers, Frankfurt nonetheless has a fascinating history as the location for coronations within the Holy Roman Empire for more than five centuries and the home of one of Germany’s oldest Christmas markets.
- Day 2: Day at Leisure in Frankfurt. Wrap up warm as you begin your exploration of Frankfurt’s many attractions on the banks of the River Main. Stunningly beautiful on a crisp winter morning, the river provides the perfect backdrop to Museumsufer (Museum Embankment), a slew of museums covering everything cultural from fine art at the Städel Museum to ethnographic collections at the Museum der Weltkulturen. After lunch, drift north to the Dom Römer Quarter, a reconstructed old town providing a glimpse of Frankfurt in former times. Its Römerberg Square is also the site of the city’s Christmas Market, truly coming to life as the winter sun sets.
- Day 3: Day at Leisure in Frankfurt. Head to the observation deck of Main Tower, Frankfurt’s tallest publically accessible vantage point for views across the city. Then absorb the city’s café culture with a coffee or hot chocolate and pastries on charming Upper Berger Straße. End the day with a concert at Frankfurt’s impressive Alte Oper Concert Hall, or its English Theater, continental Europe’s largest English-language theater space.
- Day 4: Train to Nuremberg. Enjoy the wintery wonderland that is southern Germany with the roughly two hour train journey to Nuremberg, Bavaria. Surrounded on three sides by the Reichswald Forest, the city remains at heart a medieval one, boasting a hilltop castle and evocative old town of steeply-pitched roofs, all surrounded by centuries-old city walls.
- Day 5: Day at Leisure in Nuremberg. Begin the day on the northern edge of the city center, at the eleventh-century castle, featuring a royal palace, gardens, and views across the old town. Entering the city proper via Tiergärtnertor Gate, make a stop at the museum-home of medieval artist Albrecht Dürer before spending the afternoon in the old town on route to Nuremberg Christmas Market, located beneath the breathtaking fourteenth-century Frauenkirche Church.
- Day 6: Travel to Munich. Return to Nuremberg’s rail station for the train journey to Munich, a direct service lasting just over an hour. On arrival, check into your hotel and get your first taste of the Bavarian capital, which includes world-renowned parks, important museum collections, and on a clear day, views to the Alps’s snowy peaks.
- Day 7: Day at Leisure in Munich. Start your day at leisure in Munich in centrally located Hofgarten Park, from where you can cross into the Englisher Garten (English Garden), a naturally landscaped park running alongside the River Iser and larger than New York’s Central Park. Follow this by confronting Munich’s World War Two past at the Documentation Center for the History of National Socialism, situated on the former Nazi Headquarters. Then turn your mind to more cheery thoughts at Marienplatz, the city’s main square since 1158. Here you’ll find Munich’s main Christmas market, which plays out beneath the sound of the Town Hall’s wistful glockenspiel clock, which won’t fail to put you in the festive spirit.
- Day 8: Return Flight to the US. Make your way to Munich International Airport, a 40 minute train ride away, for your return flight to the US.
