Itinerary
- Day 1: Depart the US for Zurich, Switzerland. Board an overnight flight across the Atlantic to Zurich, the largest city in Switzerland. Located in the country’s north, it sits beside the beautiful Lake Zurich, and is divided in two by the River Limmat. Along the river’s banks lies the Old Town and attractions including Grossmünster Cathedral, while the city’s main shopping street, Bahnhofstrasse, contains some of the world’s most expensive real estate.
- Day 2: Day at Leisure in Zurich. Begin your explorations of central Zurich in the Old Town, an area known as ‘Dorfli’ by residents of the city. Technically formed from two neighborhoods, Niederdorf and Oberdorf, the Old Town is awash with charming ancient streets, as well as the city’s biggest cluster of souvenir stores. Following a long lunch on a café terrace enjoying Swiss pastries, head to the city’s main art museum, Kunsthaus, whose permanent collection includes works by Chagall, Monet, and van Gogh.
- Day 3: Day at Leisure in Zurich. Gain an alternative viewpoint of Switzerland’s biggest city with a boat ride along the River Limmat. One hour round trips launch from Landesmuseum station, providing the perfect jumping off point for then delving into the fascinating exhibitions of the Landesmuseum, Switzerland’s National Museum. Round off your time in Zurich with a cocktail or mocktail at the Jules Verne Panoramabar, where grabbing a window table is definitely worth the wait.
- Day 4: Travel from Zurich to Chur. Take advantage of Switzerland’s famed rail network to travel directly from Zurich to Chur, a journey of around 1.5 hours. Located on the River Rhine, Chur is said to be the oldest town anywhere in Switzerland. It also has one of the most intact historic centers, making its Old Town’s cobbled streets and quaint shopfronts an unmissable sight.
- Day 5: Ride the Glacier Express from Chur to Brig. Return to Chur’s centrally-located train station to step aboard the distinctive red and white coaches of the Glacier Express. Even without its large panoramic windows this would be a journey to remember, passing through an incredible landscape of valleys and gorges as you cross the Alps. Requiring no less than 291 bridges and rising to a height of 6,670 feet above sea level, the Glacier Express takes approximately four hours. It calls at well-known destinations including Andermatt and Oberwald, before stopping at your destination of Brig, where you’ll overnight. Spend the afternoon making the short stroll to the dramatic Stockalper Palace Museum, or instead choose to soak in the mineral-rich waters of Brig’s very own thermal baths.
- Travelling by train to the picturesque mountain village of Grindelwald, you have free time to look around. Return to Brig by train.
- Day 6: Travel South from Brig to Venice, Italy. The surrounding vistas will continue to amaze as you leave Brig by train for Venice, perhaps the world’s most picturesque city, a direct journey scheduled to last exactly three hours. Crossing the unmanned Swiss-Italian border on route to Milan, your train will next skirt the southern shores of Lake Garda, Italy’s largest lake. It then continues to the city of Romeo and Juliet – Verona – before arriving on the lagoon islands that form Venice at Santa Lucia station. From here you are already in the Venice of the postcards, just meters from the Grand Canal and this waterway’s incredible array of attractions.
- Day 7: Day at Leisure in Venice. Discover Venice how Venice is meant to be discovered, on the water, by purchasing a ticket for a vaporetto water bus. Better yet, travel along the Grand Canal in style on a traditional gondola. Disembark at the Rialto Bridge, then wind your way down alleyways and over bridges to Saint Mark’s Square, the location of Venice’s majestic Basilica and Campanile. Having enjoyed a coffee at Caffé Florian on the square, take in the collections at the Doge’s Palace before strolling through the Giardini Reali (Royal Gardens) towards the iconic church of Santa Maria della Salute. Come evening, dine with the locals on a side street with a plate of seafood pasta to mark the end of this remarkable vacation.
- Day 8: Return to the US from Venice. Depart central Venice for Marco Polo Airport for your return flight to the US.
