Private Island Rental with Waterfront Cabanas on Private Caribbean Island
The Belize Barrier Reef is the second longest reef in the world. One of the small islands near it is Waterfoot Caye, situated approximately eight miles offshore from the town of Dangriga in the southeastern part of the country. Measuring about three acres, the entire island is privately owned. This is where you’ll find Yok Ha Resort, one of the most exclusive destinations in Belize. Guests enjoy access to some of the best snorkeling, fishing, and scuba diving in the world. And Dangriga, the cultural capital of Belize, is a short boat ride away.
Yok Ha Resort comprises five brightly colored cabanas scattered along the edge of the Caribbean Sea. There are plenty of ways to enjoy the island. You can hop into one of the complimentary kayaks or rent scuba gear from the onsite dive shop and explore the offshore coral reefs. The resort also offers a number of half- and full-day tours—one takes you to Belize’s famous jaguar preserve, which also has howler monkeys and pumas. Back at the resort, Chief’s Place serves complimentary Belizean meals, including three-course dinners with fresh seafood specials. Accommodations may be made for diet and food allergies.
Privately owned and with a 360-degree view of the Caribbean Sea, Yok Ha is a truly special island resort. It’s ideal for yoga retreats, family reunions, corporate events, group vacations, or even a beach wedding. Tours are available for purchase and can be booked at the resort, including an antelope hike, cave tubing, Mayan encounter, and spear fishing.
Stann Creek, Belize: Mayan Ruins, World-Renowned Scuba Diving, and Exotic Wildlife
Located along the coast on the southeastern section of Belize, the district of Stann Creek is one of Belize’s top tourist destinations. The Mayans occupied this region as early as AD 250, and its interior landscape is strewn with impressive ancient ruins set against the Maya Mountains. Today, people come to Stann Creek to see these ruins, enjoy the tropical climate, and visit the area’s eco-tourism destinations.
Opportunities for hiking, river tubing, snorkeling, and scuba diving abound in Stann Creek. The Belize Barrier Reef—the world’s second-longest reef—runs the length of the coastline. There eagle rays, octopuses, dolphins, sharks, and other fascinating creatures inhabit its cays and atolls. You can also see exotic wildlife at the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, the world’s first jaguar reserve. Located just 10 miles from the Caribbean, the sanctuary was created to keep the jaguar from extinction. Visitors can follow the well-kept trails that cut through the 160-square-mile park, home to howler monkeys, pumas, ocelots, toucans, and much more.
On the mainland you can walk around Dangriga, the capital of the Stann Creek district, and historically home to the Garifuna people. The coastal town is still devoted to its Afro-Caribbean heritage; many residents communicate with their ancestors through dancing and drumming circles.
