If every Gap storefront around the world—from LA and Paris to Milan and Mumbai—were set in a row, a window-shopper would stroll for 10 miles to pass them all. The New York Times wrote, “It’s hard to overstate Gap’s place in American retailing,” since the founders “basically invented the specialty apparel store.” In fact, when they opened the first Gap store in San Francisco in 1969, Doris and Don Fisher had much simpler aspirations: they sold blue jeans that would fit people like themselves, caught in the “generation gap” between youth and adult sizes.
