About TUMI

In 1975, entrepreneur Charlie Clifford was fondly reminiscing about his stint in the Peace Corps in Peru. Inspired by his experiences and invigorated by travel, he founded TUMI, named after the ceremonial knife that was becoming a Peruvian national symbol to promote tourism. Black-on-black ballistic nylon luggage and classic leather briefcases were the brand’s forerunners, but the company evolved with the times. Like Clifford, many customers in the ’70s were fans of leather and handcrafted goods, but in the ’80s it was luggage with separate compartments that kept TUMI at the head of the pack.

The evolution never stopped. Over the years, TUMI has acquired more than 25 patents for design and engineering advances. “We’d constantly make changes and tweaks,” Clifford said of his design process. “Better handles, more pockets, stronger screws to hold the piece together.” One of their most unique features is the TUMI Tracer program: each bag is equipped with a metal plate bearing a unique 20-digit number, which can be registered so that owners can be reunited with lost or stolen baggage.
