The Deal

The Book of Mormon

“Hie thee hence, nonbelievers (and believers too), to The Book of Mormon, and feast upon its sweetness,” wrote Ben Brantley for the New York Times. But the show goes well beyond the piousness suggested by that quote. According to Brantley, it’s also “blasphemous, scurrilous and more foul-mouthed than David Mamet on a blue streak.” While that’s an atypical description of a Broadway musical, it should come as no surprise when you look at the creators of The Book of Mormon: Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the madmen behind South Park. And thanks to the Tony and Grammy awards they earned for their first foray into Broadway, they’re now three-quarters of the way to an EGOT (that’s an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and whatever the T stands for).

Theirs wasn’t the only Tony snatched by The Book of Mormon, which swept up nine statues in its wake, not to mention some Oliviers, a few Drama Desks, and that Grammy. It’s an impressive amount of hardware for a simple story of faith and friendship. In the show, Elder Price and Elder Cunningham, two young missionaries, travel to Africa to spread the good news and say “Hello!” But faith is a complicated thing in a society grappling with poverty, violence, and medical crises, and the missionaries actually might have more to learn than to teach. Their journey ends up being one of sacrilege, show-stopping song-and-dance numbers, a donkey cart full of profanity, and plenty of heart.
