What You’ll Do

Though most live plants add a touch of vibrant color to the home, they can be finicky to care for. The solution: succulent plants. Unlike more temperamental plants, succulents such as cacti can adapt to unpredictable watering, happily thriving even when they slip their owners’ mind. With succulent expert Brandi Chalker, you’ll make your own succulent terrarium, filling a glass orb with soil, rocks, and hand-picked succulents.

Walking along the streets near her Outer Sunset home, Brandi Chalker was always struck by the beauty and variety of succulent plants that thrived in the sandy soils and ocean air. In 2008, it dawned on her that those same resilient plants could make handsome decorations for homes, both inside and out. Starting with a single trimming, she taught herself how to assemble succulent terrariums, and before she knew it, her hobby grew into Sunshine & Succulents, which was recently named by SF Weekly as the best place to get plants you won’t kill.
