About Celtic Festival & Highland Games

The cultures of Scotland and Ireland haven't always meshed in the history book. However, at the Central Virginia Celtic Festival & Highland Games, these two proud heritages will coexist happily for a weekend of autumn fun. Read on to learn more about the festival's highlights:

  • The Athletics: The main attraction of the festival are the feats of Scottish and Irish athleticism on display. Like any good Highland games, that means plenty of traditional heavy events, recognizable by the giant weighted items that are hefted, tossed, and pressed in pursuit of victory. The festival also offers a full slate of other sports, including rugby and hurling, a favorite of Ireland and its Gaelic Athletic Association.
  • The Arts and Music: The festival also offers a showcase for traditional arts and music. Aspiring performers will compete in various performance contests, in disciplines ranging from fiddle and harp to pipe and drum. There will also be plenty of Highland dance sessions, for those who just want to see dance for dance's sake.
  • The Activities: Elsewhere at the festival, these an activity for every mood. Highlights include live music from the Fighting Jamesons and other Celtic bands, bagpipes, dancing, fiddle and harp competitions, bounce houses, pumpkin and face painting, kids games, heavy athletics, and traditional food and beverages.
