For the 23rd straight year, Great Lakes Theater stages its artistic director’s adaptation of Dickens’s classic morality tale with a multigenerational cast that brings more than 60 characters to life. As the light is drawn from the intimate theater’s domed ceiling, audience members slowly slip into a Victorian parlor, where a family congregates to enjoy the holiday classic over a boiling cauldron of eggnog. With Bob Cratchit toiling away on Christmas Eve in Ebenezer Scrooge’s office, spectators will abhor the miserly old man whose surname has entered the Yuletide lexicon. The theater’s passions will sway, however, after three ghosts visit Mr. Scrooge to teach him the true meaning of the holiday. Eerie lights wash over the stage and ominous groans rumble through the room as the production team’s special effects spotlight the supernatural. At the end of the 105-minute production, audience members, like Scrooge, will find a new appreciation for life, their fellow man, and the strong moral fiber of chains.
