Mummies of the World

To make Mummies of the World: The Exhibition, it took 10 museums, several countries, and thousands of years. That work resulted in a collection of 45 mummified specimens and artifacts from around the globe. Each one has a story for viewers to discover. The Orlovits family was interred in a long-forgotten Hungarian church crypt in the 18th century and discovered only in 1994. The Baron von Holz meanwhile most likely died in Germany nearly 400 years ago, and was discovered by descendants of his relatives in the crypt of his own family’s castle. Naturally, the ancient Egyptians are well-represented, with their ranks including a cat mummy in painted linens.

Non-invasive technological advances such as DNA analysis and radiocarbon dating draw back the shroud of history without disturbing the mummies. 3-D animation reveals the process of preserving a mummy so that it survives the ravages of time. An in-depth audio tour helps visitors delve into the lives of the humans they once were and the world they knew.
