David Calzado and La Charanga Habanera

  • Their beginnings: La Charanga Habanera began in 1988 when a group of young art school graduates in Cuba came together to play charanga, a style of Cuban music that was popular in the ’40s and ’50s. The ensemble garnered enough buzz to share stages with greats including Donna Summer, Stevie Wonder, and James Brown.
  • The sound their pioneered: In 1992, David Calzado assumed leadership of the ensemble and reorganized it with a new lineup. During this period, the group updated their sound with elements of salsa, American funk, and Afro-Cuban folkloric music, creating a new style of music that is now known as “timba.”
  • Their accolades: They ruled the airwaves in Cuba throughout the ’90s with hits such as “Me sube la fiebre,” and took home multiple Cubadisco and Lucas Awards in the process. They were also nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2003 for the album Live in the U.S.A.
