The Scouting Report

After finishing atop the Eastern Conference in 2014, D.C. United finds itself in that same spot as the 2015 season winds toward August. Similar to a year ago, the Black and Red have stifled opposing attacks with the conference’s top defense, which allows less than a goal per match. In the coming weeks, though, adjustments will be necessary: starting goalie and reigning MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Bill Hamid will be out with injuries, leaving it up to backup goalie Andrew Dykstra to step in as he has several times already this season. Either way, the keeper will be put to the test when the Philadelphia Union roll into town on July 26.

D.C. United

As rain pummeled Foxboro Stadium on October 20, 1996, D.C. United overcame a two-goal deficit against L.A. Galaxy to claim the first-ever MLS Championship. Little did anyone know at the time, but the Black and Red had begun their reign as the league’s most dominant team.

In the decades since, D.C. United—whose name is a nod to Manchester and Leeds United—has stocked its trophy case with three more league championships, as well as three U.S. Open Cups and one CONCACAF title.
