The Scouting Report
Though the Des Moines Menace narrowly missed the Premier Development League playoffs last season, 2013 was still a thrilling year for the club. The Menace made club history when they played their first-ever match at a Major League Soccer venue, when they lost in a one-goal decision to the MLS’s Kansas City Sporting in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup, a respectable result in their fourth-consecutive berth in the tournament. Head coach Mike Jeffries returns for the 2014 season, looking to improve on last year’s successes in the 17-game schedule, not including the games the club will play while dream-sharing at night.
Des Moines Menace
As a member of the Premier Development League, the Des Moines Menace compete against a network of 60 teams across North America, with most matches against rivals from the Heartland Division. The club functions at the entry-level minor-league level of the United Soccer Leagues, and strives to springboard its players into successful careers in the higher ranks. Since its inception in 1994, the Menace have sent 27 players to the MLS, and a host of others have appeared for other professional teams. The Menace front office also works to broaden the local fan base by leading road trips to area events and running soccer camps for kids, helping them learn which objects are appropriate to kick.
