Torn
A joint USA/Pakistan production from writer-director Jeremiah Birnbaum, Torn is an emotional drama that taps into the turbulence of modern times. Maryam Munsif, an upper-class Pakistani immigrant, and Lea Pelletier, a blue-collar single mom, forge a bond when both of their sons are killed by an explosion in a shopping mall. Just when it seems that the distraught mothers have found peace, Maryam’s departed Muslim son is named as the prime suspect in the bombing. This special screening of Torn is preceded by the Iranian short film Bishtar Az Do Saat (More Than Two Hours) and Mobile Homes, a short film about human trafficking.<p>
Closing Night Screening and Celebration: Part One
Foster Official Trailer
Although Sunday marks the actual final day of the festival, the "official" closing night starts on Saturday so that festivalgoers can take in Providence's nighttime cultural offerings. The evening's screenings share a motif of precocious children, headlined by director Jonathan Newman's whimsical dramedy [Foster](http://gr.pn/13DkzoT). Based on the short film of the same name that premiered at RIIFF in 2006, Foster tells the tale of a couple trying desperately, and failing, to conceive a child. Suddenly—and perhaps magically—a dapper and strangely eloquent seven-year-old shows up at their door, saying he's been sent by the foster agency. With an all-star cast featuring Toni Collette, Richard E. Grant, and The Parent Trap's Haley Mills, Foster makes for charming, PG-rated family viewing. Two short films precede Foster, including [Rocketship](http://gr.pn/13Drte2), the tale of a boy and an elderly astronaut building a spacecraft from a vacuum cleaner, and [Rosita Lopez for President](http://gr.pn/13DrK0v), chronicling a 14-year-old's quest for the White House.

About Rhode Island International Film Festival
It started in 1981 as "The Newport Film Society," and by 1983, it had become the area's very first international film festival. Today, the tradition continues under the moniker of Flickers: Rhode Island International Film Festival. Despite the change in name and audiences' evolving tastes in popcorn, the event's mission remains constant: to showcase features, documentaries, and shorts by independent filmmakers from across the globe. Ranked as one of the top 10 short film festivals and top 10 international film festivals in Chris Gore's The Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide, RIIFF is also among the few such events recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to qualify short films for Oscar gold.
