Formula Drift

• The sport: Drifting—the only judged four-wheel motorsport in the world originating in Japan 20 years ago—has evolved into an international competition attracting top talent from around the world. Formula Drift first revved its engines in 2003 in order to bring the sport to the United States and has since been recognized as a leading international drifting championship.
• The racing format: consists of a qualifying round where drivers get individual passes on the circuit and are judged on speed, ability to maintain their line around the track, and overall style. The drivers go head-to-head in subsequent heats through tandem passes featuring a lead driver followed by a chase driver turning up the pressure.
• Midwest round: The 2018 season celebrates its 15th anniversary and will feature eight rounds of competition. The St. Louis region hosts the sixth round at Gateway Motorsports Park’s 340-acre facility where drivers will compete on a 1.6-mile circuit inside the superspeedway.
• The competition: Irishman James Deane—the Guinness World Record Holder for the longest tandem drift—looks to defend his 2017 Pro championship, while top American Chris Forsberg will be chasing him for an opportunity to add another championship to his name after victories in 2009, 2014, and 2016.
