Directed and choreographed by Craig Cipollini, Xanadu—presented by the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, DC—puts its own spin on the cult classic. Spoofing the 1980s film that starred Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly, the musical chronicles the mythical and magical inspiration behind the first roller disco in Venice Beach, telling the tale of a Greek muse who takes the form of a roller-skating mortal. The cast of 74, which includes singers, roller skaters, drag queens, and a pair of magic leg warmers, brings the show to life at Lisner Auditorium, infusing it with a message of the importance of following one’s dreams. While reveling in the neon-hued production, audience members can sing along to hits popularized by Electric Light Orchestra, such as “Evil Woman,” “Have You Never Been Mellow,” and the title tune.<p>
