Grease
Summer dreams ripped at the seams
But, oh, those summer nights
The summer before his senior year at Rydell High, Danny Zuko fell in love. The only problem, he tells his greaser gang (in song, of course), is that at the summer’s end the girl of dreams went back to Australia. Except that’s not actually what happened. It turns out that girl, Sandy Dumbrowski, is newly enrolled at Rydell and singing the same song to the Pink Ladies, the female equivalent of Danny’s Burger Palace Boys. Soon, the two find each other anew, and must reconcile their feelings with the pressure of fitting into their respective cliques. But that doesn’t mean they can’t sing their hearts out. While Grease slicks audiences back to 1959, songs such as “Greased Lightnin’,” “We Go Together,” and the immortal “Summer Nights” nod to early rock and roll.
Grease sends up the idealism of the ’50s by exploring what it means to be a teenager—rambunctious, rebellious, and always down to study—in just about any time period. Originally, though, that exploration delved into relatively mature themes. The original 1971 production was raunchy and often vulgar, touching on teen pregnancy, gang violence, and class conflict. Then came the 1977 film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, which launched Grease into the annals of popular cultural. Today, the more family-friendly version stands as one of the most popular (and most frequently produced) musicals in the world.
