At Ontario Improv, comics lure laughs from bellies in the hopes of following in the footsteps of standup legends such as Ellen DeGeneres, Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, and Dave Chappelle, all of whom have graced the Improv’s stages. The club’s calendar schedules comedians as often as six nights a week, alternating between big-name headliners and up-and-coming funsters who tickle funny bones with fresh material, abundant energy, and feathered reflex hammers. Though special shows are excluded, voucher holders may attend sets from a diverse lineup of certified funnymen, including Joey “Coco” Diaz (November 1–4), whose bruiser demeanor and brawling Jersey accent have landed him countless tough-guy roles on film and TV. Ranting, raving, and filling swear jars in one breath, the ruthless comedian keeps his dukes up and scares hecklers back into their heckle holes with relentlessly funny tirades that scored him a No. 1 comedy album on iTunes.
Fans of acute observations and uncanny impersonations can savor the animated comedy of Darren Carter “The Party Starter” (November 15–18). His vocal mimicry and riffs on the perils of being redheaded can be heard during his live sets and on his album That Ginger’s Crazy. Audience members munch on their choice of a savory appetizer, such as baja fish tacos, chicken flautas, or fried calamari, and sip a cocktail to avoid eye contact with the giant rubber chicken sitting at the next table (drinks not included with this deal).
