Show Boat

• The Show: the groundbreaking 1927 musical about a diverse band of sailors, performers, and townsfolk onboard the steamboat Cotton Blossom in Jim Crow-era Mississippi
• The Music: immortal songs by Oscar Hammerstein and Jerome Kern such as “Ol’ Man River,” “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man,” and “Make Believe”
• The Impact: it wasn’t just ahead of its time for its unsanitized take on racial politics, it also marked a watershed in American musicals, proving that they could take on serious topics without sacrificing big, catchy numbers

La Cage Aux Folles

• The Story: When the son of a gay nightclub owner and a female impersonator gets engaged, he wants his parents to meet his fiancee and her family. The snag: his betrothed’s father is a conservative, homophobic politician who has no idea his future son-in-law has two male parents.
• The Legacy: This comedic yet poignant musical has remained a stage classic, and also inspired the Robin Williams/Nathan Lane film The Birdcage. But on the stage or on a really big screen, the story remains funny and inspiring, picking up nine Tony Awards across its various Broadway runs.
• The Music: Classics like “The Best of Times is Now” and “I Am What I Am”
