Cirque show casts spectacle of acrobatics, dance, projections, and live music, blurring lines between stage performance and moving image

Before the invention of film, people sought out entertainment at the circus, where acrobats would fly through the air in front of CGI explosions. Watch poetry in motion with this deal to see Cirque du Soleil’s Iris at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Choose between the following seating options:

  • For $59, you get one ticket for category 2 seating, marked in blue on the seating chart (up to a $103 value).
  • For $79, you get one ticket for category 1 seating, marked in red on the seating chart (up to a $133 value).<p>

The show runs from October 16 through November 4; for a list of available performances, click here. Cirque du Soleil’s Iris is a “love letter to the art and science of cinema,” lauds the Los Angeles Times. Performed in the heart of Hollywood at the Dolby Theatre, this $100 million extravaganza celebrates the fantasy and nostalgia of motion pictures with the flair of acrobatics, dance, projections, and live music. Throughout the spectacle, two young heroes venture down a rabbit’s hole of cinematic genres, rife with towering shadows, colorful sets, and tableaus that explore the physical nature of film itself. The show’s creative team, which includes choreographer/director Philippe Decouflé and the Oscar-nominated composer Danny Elfman (Big Fish, Alice in Wonderland), have blurred the boundary between stage and screen, much like a buddy-cop film that stars Romeo and Mercutio.

Aerial acrobats soar over the audience, others bounce off elaborate stage sets while some burst through a video screen lit up with projected images and flowing after-images. Some of these scenes—in which a human performer interacts with his or her on-screen avatar—are what the Times called the show’s “most ingenious moments.” In all, 200 costumes drape 72 performers, who tumble and twist before 174 loudspeakers, 603 lighting features, 20 video projectors, and 160,000 watts of sound that flood the performance floor’s 8,300 square feet.
