Jazz’n the Vines satiates predilections for tasty wines and syncopated music with outdoor concerts showcasing some of New Orleans’ most vibrant musicians. On March 31, the Grammy-nominated Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys regales eardrums with classic Cajun tunes, sung with lyrics virtually unchanged from their 17th-century French origins and backed by celebratory fiddle, button box, and an animal-control officer to keep out snooty Parisian skunks. Later on in April, Luther Kent moans the blues into his mic with a gruff swing carefully honed since he started singing professionally at 14. Bombastic congas and brass whirlwind around the passionate pipes of Javier Gutierrez & Viváz as they dole out authentic Caribbean beats on May 5, and funk diva Charmaine Neville and her big band take the stage on May 19, transforming everything from children’s songs to Beatles hits into jazzy explorations laced with Neville’s lightning-quick vibrato and Amasa Miller’s improvisational keys.
On June 2, Tuba Skinny transports listeners back to the 1930s and ’40s with a ramshackle jazz and blues ensemble teeming with foghorn brass and smoky vocals before the Pfister Sisters carry the torch of euphonic jazz harmony on June 16 with their interlocking trio of voices. Led by the whimsical banjo and raspy verbalization of Don Vappie, the Patriots celebrate the nation’s birthday on June 30 with a slate of old-timey Creole jazz songs.
Audiences are invited to pack picnics and nonalcoholic beverages, complimented by tasty bottles of Pontchartrain Vineyards’ distinctive zydeco white or rosato. Crisp white wine refreshes pallets while the rosé tickles tongues with an off-dry texture and spicy finish redolent of ginger, Red Hots, and a candy cane with flames instead of stripes.
