Mission San Juan Capistrano: Historic Landmark, Chapel, Museum, and Gardens
Mission San Juan Capistrano, often called the “Jewel of the California Missions,” is a historic landmark and museum that serves as the Birthplace of Orange County. Founded over 200 years ago, it was the 7th of 21 missions established across California. The site features a chapel where Saint Junípero Serra once celebrated Mass, making it a treasured monument to California’s rich, multicultural heritage.
The Mission reflects a blend of Native American, Spanish, Mexican, and European influences. Originally constructed as a self-sufficient community by Spanish Padres and Native Americans, it was a hub for agriculture, industry, education, and religion. Today, it is renowned for the Annual Return of the Swallows and draws more than 300,000 visitors annually.
In addition to its historic structures and gardens, the Mission offers high-quality permanent exhibits featuring original artifacts, as well as traveling and temporary exhibits on diverse topics, ensuring a dynamic experience for all who visit.
