This December, State Theatre presents its 49th annual performance of The Nutcracker, as the American Repertory Ballet’s critically acclaimed dancers join pirouetting forces with students from Princeton Ballet School. Soon after her toy nutcracker doll comes to life, Clara helps him wage an elaborately choreographed battle against the evil Mouse King. Armed with Tchaikovsky’s eternal score, a live orchestra’s melodious accompaniment guides the couple’s journey and hypnotizes passing children to stop biting their fingernails. Before Clara meets the Sugar Plum Fairy and awakens from her dreamscape, she and the Nutcracker Prince pas de deux across various fantastical terrain, such as the Land of Sweets and a province ruled by tyrannical snowmen. Built in 1921, State Theatre graces guests with a stage that has hosted countless historic performers, including Bruce Springsteen, Aretha Franklin, Jay Leno, and the New York Philharmonic.

About "The Nutcracker" presented by State Theatre

The State Theatre New Jersey was saved, as its website states, from "the ravages of time." Built in 1921 as a vaudeville and silent-film palace, the venue fell on hard times in the 1970s. In 2003, however, a $3 million renovation restored the State Theatre New Jersey to much of its original glory, as crews painstakingly rehabbed the ornamental plaster, terracotta exterior, and actor holding cells. Inside the theater, a stunning chandelier sparkles more brightly than ever below the venue's signature dome.
