The Scouting Report

The top riders of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association descend upon the Ogden Pioneer Rodeo a bronco-busting celebration of frontier culture. From Saturday to Wednesday, four nights of PRCA competition regale crowds of up to 30,000, as rodeo stars attempt to stay on bucking mounts, flash their roping skills, and test out the new adhesive preventing their hat from falling off. Each night will also include pre-rodeo activities, such as mutton bustin’ and wild cow milking.

Ogden Pioneer Rodeo

In 1934, Ogden City Mayor Harman W. Peery wanted to do something special for his constituents. To celebrate the people and the cultural heritage of his city, he organized the first Ogden Pioneer Days, a western festival that would become an annual tradition. In the early days, the event included whimsical events such as a beard-growing competition—spearheaded by the police department—and competitive baseball games, forging communal bonds more effectively than enacting a one-shower-per-neighborhood law. In the ensuing years, the rodeo became a summertime celebration of Utah statehood, replete with the annual Miss Rodeo Utah competition as well as parades, fireworks, and concerts. The event has also grown into one of the largest rodeos on the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s Wilderness Circuit, drawing rodeo stars and spectators from Nevada, Utah, and Idaho.
