Inside historic century-old theater, talented cast packages the joy of the season in classic Dickens tale infused with seasonal melodies

Pittsburgh CLO’s A Musical Christmas Carol

A Pittsburgh tradition for more than two decades, A Musical Christmas Carol encapsulates the jovial spirit and yuletide magic of the holiday in a production that infuses the classic Dickens tale with seasonal melodies. Audiences warm their hearts by the hearth of the rebirth of Scrooge from a miserly villain into a joyful philanthropist. The assembly of the lavishly costumed cast is rivaled by the construction of the sets, where smoke and light seem to seep from the depths of the stage as Jacob Marley returns to rattle his chains at his former partner and the Cratchits share Christmas dinner in their home. The good tidings are amplified by beloved carols including “Silent Night,” “Deck the Halls,” and “Joy to the World,” ferrying audiences back to Christmas mornings spent opening presents and dusting for Santa Claus’ prints.

About Pittsburgh CLO

Dedicated to celebrating musical theater's past and present while paving the way toward its future, the Pittsburgh CLO lauds distinguished musical-theater folk while launching the careers of the next generation. Originally dubbed the Civic Light Opera Association, the Pittsburgh CLO launched in 1946 to much fanfare, including that of the Sun Telegraph, which declared "the CLO will inaugurate a cycle in the city's musical history that will outlive us all." Their assertion proved true—the CLO moved several times to support its expansion, established an Academy of Musical Theater, created the Gene Kelly Awards for Excellence in High School Musical Theater, and injected itself with an immortality serum. Its spot in Pittsburgh's cultural community solidified, the CLO continues to stage national tours and Broadway shows while cultivating homegrown talent with original premieres.
