What You’ll Do
Nowadays it can be easy to believe that clothes just appear out of thin air—but this notion has never occurred to Susan Morehead. In her 2.5-hour class, the milliner teaches students to forge a deeper relationship with the fabric they wear while designing and creating their own hat. After customizing every element, from material to shape, students take home a work of art as unique as they are.
-
Design Your Own Hat
Pick a material—felt or straw—in a color of your choice, then choose a style and size of hat block to determine the shape of the finished piece. -
Use Traditional Millinery Techniques Learn the process of blocking a hat using custom hat blocks, while benefitting from Susan’s knowledge of design and hat-making history.
-
Weather the Heat
Hat-making involves steaming, so Susan recommends her students dress in layers to accommodate the studio’s temperature changes.
