For nearly 50 years, the Improv Comedy Club chain, where notable alumni such as Jerry Seinfeld, Adam Sandler, and Robin Williams conquered their stage fright before their big breaks, has been one of the country’s most prized incubators of standup talent. The Tampa location carries on the Improv’s tradition of catching rising stars before they supernova with a calendar stuffed with up-and-comers and seasoned jokesters. Sirius Satellite Radio staple Mitch Fatel (November 8–11) excels in subversion, using his mischievous boyish charm to get away with comedic murder. Hypnotist-comedian Glenn Miller puts audiences under before plundering their psyches for laughs on Wednesday, November 21, which features an 8 p.m. show for the faint of heart and an R-rated 10:15 p.m. show for saltier minds.
Other upcoming comics include Alex Reymundo (November 23–25), a member of The Original Latin Kings of Comedy whose Comedy Central special Hick-Spanic won an ALMA award for Outstanding Comedy Special. John Morgan (November 29–December 2)—aka “The Ragin’ Cajun”—serves up spicy observations about fatherhood and relationships, and comedian-turned-director Bobcat Goldthwait (December 29–30) rings in the New Year with sharp-nosed satire delivered in his distinct warble. Although not included in today’s Groupon, Tampa Improv serves up a robust menu of drinks, entrees, appetizers, and desserts to occupy maws between fits of hyena cackles.
